The following policies govern how we use our library.

Acceptable Use of the Internet and Library Public Computers
Welcome! We are pleased to be able to offer Internet access at the Elkhart Public Library. Please read the policy manual that is next to each computer at the library for more details on the rules and regulations regarding Internet use in the library and compliance with federal law. Your cooperation is appreciated.
The violation of any terms of the Elkhart Public Library's policy may result in suspension or revocation of Library Internet access privileges or even the suspension or revocation of general Library use privileges. Please act responsibly!

Behavior in the Library
The Elkhart Public Library is dedicated to providing access to knowledge and information through reading, writing, and quiet contemplation, and providing for patrons the right to use materials and services without being distrubed or impeded and providing patrons and employees with a secure and comfortable environment. The Public Library Act provides the Board of Library Trustees with the general power to carry out the spirit and intent of the Act in establishing and maintaining the Library and providing library services, and the specific power to "exclude from the use of the library any person who willfully violates an ordinance or regulation prescribed."

Children Alone in the Library: Guidelines for Parents and Staff
Parents are responsible for the behavior of their children while they are in the Library. Children under the age of six must be accompanied and directly supervised at all times by a parent or other responsible caregiver. When the safety of an unattended child is in doubt, or the parent or responsible caregiver cannot be located, or the Library is closing, Library staff is authorized to call the police and stay with the child until the police arrive.

Statement on Privacy and Confidentiality of Library Records
The Elkhart Public Library abides by Illinois Law, which states that the records of patron transactions and the identity of registered library patrons is confidential material. The Elkhart Public Library does not make available the records of patron transactions to any party except in compliance with the law. The Elkhart Public Library does not make available lists of registered library patrons except in compliance with the law.
